Calvin McCarter

Machine Learning Researcher

I am a machine learning researcher who hopes to use AI to make humans happier, healthier, and more free. I did my PhD in the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University. Before that, I majored in Computer Science Engineering and minored in Mathematics at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Since graduating, I've worked at Lightmatter, training neural networks to be robust to noisy hardware, and at Tempus Labs, using ML to improve precision medicine for cancer patients.

In my free time, I've worked with Robin Hanson on an astrobiological model with important implications for SETI. I've also done independent research on domain adaptation in the presence of confounding (i.e. both covariate shift and label shift).
